Merrily We Roll Along
September 18, 24 & 25, 2006
at the Alex Theatre (09/18), Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center (09/24), Carpenter Center (09/25)

Book by George Furth
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Based on a play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart

“Merrily We Roll Along’s” structure is controversial: it moves backwards to chronicle the bittersweet lives and loves of Mary, Frank and Charley, three life-long friends who make their way in show business. The show’s score is not: it is one of the finest of all the 1980’s musicals, with a thrilling collection of songs, including “Old Friends”, “Not a Day Goes By”, “Our Time” and the Sinatra classic, “Good Thing Going”. We are proud to start off our season, and mark MTG’s 50th production, with Stephen Sondheim at his most straightforward, brilliant Broadway best!

It`s a Bird . . . It`s a Plane . . . It`s Superman
November 20, 2006
at the Alex Theatre

Book by David Newman and Robert Benton
Music by Charles Strouse, Lyrics by Lee Adams

Based on the comic strip, "Superman"

Even though it got highly respectable reviews (“Sheer comic-strip adventure served hot and ready”, said the NY Morning Telegraph) and ran almost 150 performances, this 1966 musical has never had a west coast revival. Until now! The story (by "Bonnie & Clyde" writers Benton & Newman) has Superman facing a mad scientist, an evil newsman and, perhaps worse, a foe for the hand of Lois Lane. Strouse & Adams' score is sophisticated fun (“You’ve Got Possibilities”) and a worthy follow-up to their Bye Bye Birdie. Come discover the musical “Man of Steel!”

Street Scene
February 12 & 18, 2007
at the Alex Theatre (02/12) and at the Scherr Forum (02/18)

Play by Elmer Rice
Music by Kurt Weill, Lyrics by Langston Huges

Based on the play, "Street Scene"

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play, “Street Scene” is a highly dramatic musical about one day in the life of a New York tenement, where seduction, betrayal and murder all play a part. Weill broke new ground, using an unusual combination of musical styles – some Puccini-esque, others jazz, jitterbug and even gospel. “Street Scene’ has tremendous cast and musical requirements and is, thus, rarely performed. MTG is pleased to present it as a “once in a lifetime” special in-concert event.

A Connecticut Yankee
April 23 & 30, 2007

Book by Herbert Fields
Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Lorenz Hart

Based on the Mark Twain novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court

First mounted in 1927, then revived in 1943, “A Connecticut Yankee” contains the last song ever written by Rodgers & Hart (the deadly funny “To Keep My Love Alive”). It’s the story of Martin, a Connecticut resident, who’s knocked out and sent back in time to Camelot when his fiancée hits him on the head with a champagne bottle. After outwitting a sorceress and winning his true bride, Martin returns to the 20th century for a happy ending, but not before singing such rousing classics as “My Heart Stood Still” and “Thou Swell”. “So many fetching songs”, said Alexander Woolcott.

Blood Brothers
June 11 & 18, 2007

Music & Lyrics by Willy Russell

"Blood Brothers" is the gripping story of twin boys who are separated at birth and grow up - one rich, one poor - to find their lives inextricably and tragically linked. One of the longest running musicals in London history, “Blood Brothers” won the 1983 Olivier for “Musical of the Year” and enjoyed a successful 839 performance run on Broadway with David & Shawn Cassidy and Petula Clark as their mother. The folk-flavored score is both haunting and hummable. “Unmissable and Unbeatable” raved the International Herald Tribune. An exciting conclusion to our season… and you need not fly to London!
