TBT - Lowe Taylor Cunningham on WONDERFUL TOWN, fr TBT - Lowe Taylor Cunningham on WONDERFUL TOWN, from our 2013-14 season:

"Receiving the opportunity to play “Ruth” in WONDERFUL TOWN for Lewis Wilkenfeld and MTG was one of the highlights of my acting career.  First, the score is so delicious and really allows Ruth to show off her contralto chops! Secondly, the cast across the board assembled by MTG for this gem of a show was top notch and each and every one a dream to work with.  One fun memory for me from this show - I can't choose just one and I could likely choose 10! - is playing the dinner party scene.  Kristi Holden, Jeffrey Scott Parsons and Will Collyer and scene partners that dreams are made of!  And Lewis' direction really allowed us to play, shine and be our silliest selves.  It was too much fun every night!   Oh, and my other favorite memory occurred post show when Broadway legend Roger Bart congratulated me and said, "That's the lowest note I've ever heard a woman sing! Are you a bass??" It really gave me a nice giggle!"

TBT - Broadway Star Misty Cotton on GIRL CRAZY , f TBT - Broadway Star Misty Cotton on GIRL CRAZY , from our 2012-2013 season:

"When asked about memories of MTG shows it always seems as if there are very specific moments, often just one, that are seared into the depths of your mind. The shows are put up and are over in such a short amount of time it just speeds by.  One of those special moments was when I got to sing the song "I Got Rhythm" which was originally sung by Ethel Merman in this Broadway show and undoubtably put her on the road to stardom. When I got to sing that extended note that is so famously linked to her it was an electric moment for me. I purposefully threw a little Merman style along with my own as a tip of the hat to her. The audience's energy and big response was so amazing. And while I would like to think they appreciated me a little, I know the applause was infused with her spirit and the legendary historical moment in time attributed to this song and her performance. It's a gift to be able to stand on the shoulders of theatrical giants. I'll never forget it. "

TBT - Broadway Star Melissa Fahn on A CATERED AFFA TBT - Broadway Star Melissa Fahn on A CATERED AFFAIR (2012-13):
This memoir of MTG’s A CATERED AFFAIR is tenderly dedicated to our beloved Marsha Kramer and Roy Leake Jr….who played my mother and uncle exquisitely. When I heard that MTG would be doing A CATERED AFFAIR I was somehow drawn to it without really knowing much about the material…except for the fact that it was based on a 1956 movie starring Bette Davis, Ernest Borgnine and Debbie Reynolds…and, no, it was not a musical! I immediately immersed myself in the material…reading the script, listening to the cast album and (pivotal to me) watching the old film. I felt connected to the story somehow…it was the heightened family dynamic that really drew me in. That sealed it…I must be a part of this production! It was an ensemble piece, and with Alan Bailey at the helm directing it…I knew it would be honored and taken care of in only the way Alan could…with deep deep care and finesse. I was cast as Jane (the daughter) alongside an ensemble of MTG actors each perfectly cast for their part…which doesn’t always happen in MTG. In Musical Theatre Guild, sometimes we are stretched as actors to take on parts that we may never be cast for…which is one reason I love being an MTG member! But this was different. It was organic. The piece dealt with raw family and human emotions, and we were all completely committed to the deep complexities before us. Our 25-hour rehearsal period was unlike no other I’ve experienced with MTG. So many heartfelt tears. We were emotionally exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. We were in awe of each other as actors…allowing ourselves to dig deeply into the material. It was a heightened family drama and we went there. No pretenses, just raw human emotion. It was quite simply, beautiful. One thing that really stands out was the inspiring writing of John Bucchino and Harvey Fierstein. The songs literally flowed out of each actor as extended monologues… flowing in and out of dialogue. Never have I performed in a piece that the songs so effortlessly furthered the story in and out of dialogue…it was remarkable. This was an unforgettable experience for me as an actor.
TBT - Louis Pardo on CHESS , from our 2012-2013 se TBT - Louis Pardo on CHESS , from our 2012-2013 season:

"Performing the role of Freddy Trumper with Musical Theatre Guild was one of the highlights of my musical theatre career.  Freddy is a complicated man whose neurosis ended up being his downfall, in love and in life.  But the grey area in which he existed throughout his character arc is indicative of the human experience.  Every villain does not have to be absolute evil.  Just as Anatoly did not end up being a true hero.  People make choices, and those choices do not carry inherent value of good and evil.  This life lesson has continued to follow me, learning it when I did taught me to look beyond the threshold of good and evil.

I have always been a naturally gregarious, but timid man.  However, finding the character ofFreddy I was able to tap into aspects of my personality that had long laid dormant, or never even awakened.  This show changed my perception of self and made me a visible entity in the Musical Theater community of Southern California.  For that I will always be indebted to the amazing group of artists at Musical Theatre Guild.  As a result of this show I met and made friends with the uber talented Adam Wylie, a man who I had seen onstage and admired for years prior.  Now I was somehow in the same pantheon and again, all thanks to the opportunity afforded to me by Musical Theater Guild.

During the show I threw chairs and engaged in the most ridiculous histrionics of a man who has driven himself mad.  In my favorite musical theater performance of my life, I got to sing the rock anthem of the abandoned “Pity the Child”.  I got to live and breathe a different life.  To be honest I remember singing the song, but I was completely lost in the experience.  I watched on from the theater of my mind as an observer, leading to one of the true out of body experiences that I have ever taken part in.  Working alongside such juggernauts as Kim Huber, Dan Calloway, and Broadway legend Jason Graae gave ample soil to cultivate a character as dynamic as my co-stars.  Every member of the cast had a pedigree that I aspired to and being able to be onstage with those amazing rock stars of musical theatre...
TBT - Broadway Star Michelle Duffy on HIGH SPIRITS TBT - Broadway Star Michelle Duffy on HIGH SPIRITS, from our 2009-2010 season:

"The entire experience of HIGH SPIRITS for me was just 150% DELICIOUS. I'd had a few MTG shows under my belt by then and had learned to mitigate the abject terror of the insane schedule and to just trust my instincts, fellow company members, director and belief in theater magic.....and all of those delivered in abundance. Richard Israel is genius with the genre and style and kept us moving and laughing the entire process. I reunited with my beloved Damon Kirsche as comic foil and finally got to play with the wonderful Teri Bibb plus a cast FULL of amazing folks. I got to channel my inner Cousin Serena/Endora from Bewitched, even down to the fabulous marabou-festooned white peignoir set I got to wear.  The music and story were a confection to share and the audience had as great of a ball as we did! I have so many great memories of every experience with MTG....and this is one of my most treasured. So grateful for all I learned with MTG about daring greatly and letting go."

"I can’t even remember what role I played in CALL ME MADAM (NOTE: it was “Grand Duchess Sophie”).  My best memory of MTG was the first show I did, TWO BY TWO.  Lenny Wolpe played Noah, and I don’t know if they had anyone old enough to play the role, so they brought me in, opposite Lenny.  That was back when we were at the Pasadena Playhouse.  I thought, what a wonderful show to do here.  The set (for the existing mainstage production) looked like the below deck of the Ark!  I had such a wonderful time.  I was hoping they would me to join MTG, and they did!  And I did!  And it’s been a wonderful experience through the years, everybody dedicated and friendly, like a second home.  I can’t wait until we start up again where we left off!"

TBT - Chuck Bergman, on TITANIC, from our 2012-201 TBT - Chuck Bergman, on TITANIC, from our 2012-2013 season:

"TITANIC was the epitome of everything MTG represents and offers to the musical theater audience: a rarely performed piece brought to life by experienced Broadway professionals. A one-night staged reading? The license house wouldn't even consider granting MTG the rights. But among the MTG members were artists who had worked with the composer, Maury Yeston.  A call was made, and knowing the mission and expertise of the group, he granted the rights to MTG at no cost, excited that
our group had chosen another of his works: NINE had been performed some years earlier. Showcasing words and music, the inception of any show, is the core strength of MTG, and under the guidance of Calvin Remsberg, the impossibility of floating TITANIC once more to theater audiences became another MTG success."

TBT - Gordon Goodman on SHENANDOAH, from our 2011 TBT - Gordon Goodman on SHENANDOAH, from our 2011-2012 season:

"I always say that the difference between an actor and a crazy person is that “When you’re crazy, you go into unreality and stay there. When you’re an actor, you commute.” In SHENANDOAH, (performed at the Alex and Thousand Oaks Scherr Forum theatres) I was commuting just swimmingly until, near the end…I lost my script. I didn’t need it, but Equity requires it in hand…so, offstage, with my microphone on…I quietly screamed to a stage manager “Where is my *$$##^ SCRIPT!!” Which, of course, the whole audience heard. Since it was only one of thousands of embarrassing moments in the life of Gordon Goodman, I waited for the laughter to subside, and moved on. The direction was great, and cast was overflowing with brilliant performers. It was an absolute joy. "

#TBT - National Tour Star Jeffrey Christopher Todd #TBT - National Tour Star Jeffrey Christopher Todd, on BAT BOY THE MUSICAL, from our 2010-201 season:

"I have loved every experience I’ve had with the Musical Theatre Guild, both onstage and off, but the most profound experience was playing the title role in “Bat Boy.” Not only was this a dream role of mine, but it was an opportunity to truly dive into the depths of a complex character. With our ridiculously intense, albeit brief, 29-hour rehearsal schedule I threw myself into the process mind, body, and spirit. Not only was the role challenging from an acting perspective, but it was also technically challenging as a singer. I had to create vocal stamina that would normally take weeks or months to obtain in just a matter of 3 days. The culmination of this journey was my decision to truly transform into the character through the magic of stage make up and latex prosthetics. What happened on stage, during our one night only performance, was that once in a lifetime experience that every actor dreams about having. The homework, the rehearsal, the preparation, the technique, the kind of adrenaline that only exists in the magic of live theatre all came together and I was transported out of my very own existence and for 3 incredible hours on stage I WAS Bat Boy. Every choice, every reaction, every spontaneous discovery was organically in the moment because I was no longer thinking, I was in another realm of consciousness where I was no longer an actor, but truly altogether different living and breathing being. When the show was over if felt like I had just returned from an out of body experience. It came and it went, but for that one ethereal magical moment in time I was tapped into another dimension. This is something that has made my work with The Musical Theatre Guild so rewarding. We get the chance to perform and discover shows that we don’t often have the opportunity to explore. I am forever grateful for this company and the inspirational work they continue to create on stage, season after season.

TBT - National Tour Star Stuart Ambrose, on A NEW TBT - National Tour Star Stuart Ambrose, on A NEW BRAIN, from our 2011-2012 season:

"There's a wonderful quote from A NEW BRAIN that seems more appropriate than ever this year - "Things don't get better, they just seem to and then they don't." William Finn and James Lapine's quirky, funny musical was written in the late 1990s shortly after William Finn was released from the hospital following brain surgery. It's a story about love and the many forms it can take and perhaps more importantly about the healing power of art and music. MTG's 2015 production had an incredible cast, led by the inimitable Kevin McMahon playing the role of Gordon Schwinn. I was fortunate enough to play Gordon's boyfriend, Roger, and got the chance to sing one of my all-time favorite baritone ballads - Sailing. That production was an amazing experience that I will treasure always."

Memory Monday - Alyssa M. Simmons, on LITTLE WOMEN Memory Monday - Alyssa M. Simmons, on LITTLE WOMEN, from our 2011-2012 season:

“Sometimes when you dream, your dreams come true.” My experience doing LITTLE WOMEN with MTG was a literal dream come true! Jo was a bucket list role that I figured I would never get the chance to do, as it is rarely produced. Enter MTG! I had just moved back to LA after finishing school and was lucky enough to get an audition through the one and only Shauna Marley! As no one in LA knew me and I wasn’t union or a company member, they were taking a big ole risk casting me, but I’m so grateful they did. The cast was spectacular, and I was so in awe of the people I got to share the stage with. Kirsten Chandler directed with such grace, love and trust. I will never forget collaborating with her on the Act 1 finale “Astonishing.”  I’d never had a director trust me so much and as an actor, it was an incredible feeling. I fell in love with MTG, the members and after 7 years in the company and 5 shows, they are still my favorite."

Memory Monday - David Holmes on FANNY, from our 20 Memory Monday - David Holmes on FANNY, from our 2011-2012 season:

"FANNY was the perfect choice for an MTG show. Rarely produced since its theatrical premiere in 1954, it has a book jerryrigged together from 3 French non-musical
plays and films (Marius, Fanny and César) and was quite racy for its time...especially for American audiences. The main story centered around a young man Marius (played by Dan Callaway) and his quest for the affections of his childhood love, Fanny (played by the lovely Jennifer Shelton).  The rest of the show?  Well, it showed the loves and lives of the French harbor town they lived in and it was raucous. From crazy old sailors (like the Admiral, played by me) to a belly dancing number in a local bar, the show even featured a huge circus number in the second act.  Seemed a little too much for a 25 hour rehearsal period but our director Larry Raben, musical director Daniel Thomas and choreographer Cheryl Baxter and cast, band and crew were up to the challenge. It was a wonderfully charming performance enjoyed by cast and audiences alike. Hey, I even got a chance to sing a song about an ‘Octopus’...and I can’t say that about any other musical I’ve done."

"HIGH FIDELITY was SUCH a fun show. Terrific cast. Terrific direction from Richard Israel. Such a funny book, such a singable rock score. In fact, I had a little TOO much fun in music rehearsals, wailing the high notes over and over to make sure I "had them" in my voice. Woke up the next morning with a sore throat that progressed to full laryngitis over the course the next few days. By the time of our first read-through, I could only painfully croak out the spoken lines - forget about the singing! Voice didn’t return fully until Monday afternoon right before the big show at the Alex. Phew! Lesson learned. Now - ESPECIALLY in MTG’s compressed rehearsal processes - I pace myself."
