Memory Monday - David Holmes on FANNY, from our 20 Memory Monday - David Holmes on FANNY, from our 2011-2012 season: "FANNY was the perfect choice for an MTG show. Rarely produced since its theatrical premiere in 1954, it has a book jerryrigged together from 3 French non-musical plays and films (Marius, Fanny and César) and was quite racy for its time...especially for American audiences. The main story centered around a young man Marius (played by Dan Callaway) and his quest for the affections of his childhood love, Fanny (played by the lovely Jennifer Shelton).  The rest of the show?  Well, it showed the loves and lives of the French harbor town they lived in and it was raucous. From crazy old sailors (like the Admiral, played by me) to a belly dancing number in a local bar, the show even featured a huge circus number in the second act.  Seemed a little too much for a 25 hour rehearsal period but our director Larry Raben, musical director Daniel Thomas and choreographer Cheryl Baxter and cast, band and crew were up to the challenge. It was a wonderfully charming performance enjoyed by cast and audiences alike. Hey, I even got a chance to sing a song about an ‘Octopus’...and I can’t say that about any other musical I’ve done." Memory Monday - Will Collyer on HIGH FIDELITY, fr Memory Monday - Will Collyer on HIGH FIDELITY, from our 2011-2012 season: "HIGH FIDELITY was SUCH a fun show. Terrific cast. Terrific direction from Richard Israel. Such a funny book, such a singable rock score. In fact, I had a little TOO much fun in music rehearsals, wailing the high notes over and over to make sure I "had them" in my voice. Woke up the next morning with a sore throat that progressed to full laryngitis over the course the next few days. By the time of our first read-through, I could only painfully croak out the spoken lines - forget about the singing! Voice didn’t return fully until Monday afternoon right before the big show at the Alex. Phew! Lesson learned. Now - ESPECIALLY in MTG’s compressed rehearsal processes - I pace myself." Memory Monday - Broadway Star Jason Graae on LITT Memory Monday - Broadway Star Jason Graae on LITTLE ME from our 2010-11 season: “I always dreamed of playing the not 1 but seven leads in LITTLE ME. True, I’d hoped to have more than 3 days of rehearsal but whatever. I was thrilled when Todd Nielsen called and offered little me LITTLE ME. I wasn’t yet a member of MTG but I always wanted to be. When he told me the adorable Jen Malenke would be playing my titular girlfriend, I couldn’t resist. As far as rehearsals, the whole process was a blur. The cast couldn’t have been more generous. Besides Todd, my dresser was the MVP. I’d head into the wings and she’d tell me which character was next, throw on my costume and shove me out onstage.  We did the show on Passover, which made me nervous since Act 2 was all Borscht Belt humor, but the goys in the audience laughed so it was ok. Memory Monday - National Tour Star Jennifer Shelto Memory Monday - National Tour Star Jennifer Shelton on ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, from our 2010-11 season: "Oh my gods, that Kurt Weill music! “Speak Low,” “That’s Him,” “I’m a Stranger Here Myself,” “Foolish Heart.” Could there be any better score for a soprano to sing? Just gorgeous. If that wasn’t enough to bathe my soul in deliciousness, there were the two charming and handsome leading men I was sandwiched in between: Will Collyer and Kevin Symons. So there’s that. What can I say, the cast surrounded me with fabulousness, Richard Israel, Dean Mora, and the whole creative team was what every actor hopes for, and to top it off … I even got a dream ballet. Memory Monday - Broadway Star Paul Keith on 70, GI Memory Monday - Broadway Star Paul Keith on 70, GIRLS, 70 from our 2010-11 season: "I played the very old couple, paired with Christopher Callen.  Susan Watson and I had done THE SOUND OF MUSIC together previously, and it was nice to see her again.  I was in MTG for many years   We always had a really responsive audience.  But it was difficult to rehearse so quickly, running into corners and working on scenes.  I was never a quick study, but I had to be, in this case.  It was worthwhile, because we were presenting something that was new to a lot of the audiences.  It was very hard work, but it was worth it. Marsha Kramer starred in 70, GIRLS, 70, and she was fabulous, terrific, devoted herself to theatre, very tough on herself in rehearsal.  We were longtime friends – when we first met, I was in college, she was in junior high!  Marsha was the best.  Whenever I was going crazy, she would comfort me.  She was a wonderful person and a wonderful performer.  I miss her so much, it hurts my heart." I have so many great memories of this show, but one that takes the cake, has to do with the man, the legend, Joe Hart.  A small Inside scoop-in every show, if we can, someone will end a line ‘…with a script.’ Since it’s so obvious we have to carry around scripts. So, one of the actors says, ‘Have you seen her?’ and Joe’s line is ‘Yes! I have! She was running. Fast, through the streets…carrying a script!’ It was the best, because not only did I get to work with all these talented men, but I finally had the ‘script’ line said about me! It felt like a MTG rite of passage, and the moment I really felt indoctrinated into this super talented family!" Memory Monday - Broadway Star Beth Malone on FADE Memory Monday - Broadway Star Beth Malone on FADE OUT - FADE IN, from our 2009-10 season: "My experience rehearsing and performing FADE OUT FADE IN was fantastic from beginning to end although I was a bit overwhelmed initially to be playing a role originated by the incomparable Carol Burnett. Lewis Wilkenfeld's direction, made me feel like I could explore and play as much as I wanted, which was really freeing, and also a whole lot of fun.  As the performance approached I do remember still feeling anxious, because you're always shot out of a cannon with MTG, but again Lewis and actually everyone, encouraged me to just let it fly and that's what I did.  I remember the performances flew by because the show was so buoyant.  It bounced along on waves of laughter and applause.  The audiences made me feel like I could do no wrong.  By curtain call I was fully living my FADE OUT FADE IN dream.  That's the beauty of MTG, you get to have a condensed experience that feels very satisfying.  I only hated that it was over too fast, but I'll always be grateful to have played that amazing part and to have done it with such support and love." Memory Monday - Jennifer Gordon on THE MOST HAPPY Memory Monday - Jennifer Gordon on THE MOST HAPPY FELLA from our 2008-2009 season: "THE MOST HAPPY FELLA at MTG was like a dream come true for me. When I was 4 years old, my parents, who were already established performers with the wonderful Long Beach Civic Light Opera, wanted to see if I had the "bug". So, the 3 of us auditioned and were subsequently cast in LBCLO’s production of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. My world would forever be changed.  In fact, I loved being on stage so much that I didn't understand why I didn't have any lines!!  Even as a 4 year old, I wanted my "moment in the spotlight." I watched and studied everyone during rehearsals. My favorite performer was Kelly Britt, who played Cleo.  I memorized every one of her lines and songs, and would sing "Ooh My Feet" day and night. Yes, I was 4 years old singing, "But the big son-of-a-bitch hurts the most!"  A true theater kid. So the fact that I was cast as Cleo in MTG'S production of this exquisite, but rarely mounted musical was absolute kismet. Add to that, working with the incomparable Calvin Remsberg as Director and a brilliant MTG cast, let's just say the 4 year old Jenny Gordon finally got her moment in spotlight!"
